Hamish

The broom floated slowly through the open window into the bedroom. It was half past midnight, and Hamish Williams dismounted the broom.
He glanced quickly around to make sure no one had seen him enter; he could not afford to let the girl’s parents finding him in her bedroom.
The girl in question continued snoring gently, the rise and fall of her chest the only sign of her being alive. Hamish crept softly to the bedside. Moonlight from the open window pooled on her face as he looked down on her. For a moment Hamish stood there, taking in the blond frizzy hair, freckles and small nose of Lizzy Smith.
He reached out to hold her shoulder.
“Lizzy, wake up.” He whispered as he shook it carefully, not wanting to be smacked in the face the way he had the first time he had done this. “Wake up Lizzy!”
“Hmm, shububa, wha-?” Lizzy said as she was pulled from her slumber. “Ham, what are you doing here?”
“I promised you a broom ride remember, thought I’d do it now.”
“Oh yeah, lemme get dressed first.” Lizzy pushed the blankets off her and stepped to the floor. “And no peeking ok, just because you’re my bestie, doesn’t mean you get in on everything.”
“Of course, and would my lady need anything else, refreshments mayhaps?” Hamish retorted.
Lizzy giggled. “Yes, that would be most kind, quail eggs, and bacon, with a glass of chardonnay while you’re at it Jeeves.”
Lizzy quickly slipped on some jeans, a pair of socks, trainers and her waterproof before Hamish could turn around.
And with that she hopped on behind Hamish and the nimbus shot off into the night.
When it reached the air above the Menai Strait, Hamish slowed down to a stop. Below them, the water moved sluggishly in the darkness, the lights of the Menai and Britannia bridges shone like bridges of neon across the strait while the moon lit up the mountains behind them.
Hamish sat upright and turned to look at Lizzy.
“Lizzy, I know this is a bit impromptu, but my parents are taking me to the Quidditch World Cup final next week, and I was wondering whether-”
“I wanted to come with you?!” Lizzy guessed. “I’d love to Ham.”
“Great,” Hamish looked positively relieved. “we might need to ask your parents though, and I don’t think “Oh hello Mr and Mrs Smith, do you mind if we take your daughter to see a wizarding sport-yes that’s right, we can do magic” is gonna cut it really.”
“Yeah, I can see that being and problem.” Lizzy looked thoughtful for a moment, then exclaimed. “Why don’t we just say that it’s a Muggle festival.”
“Cool, awesome, great, yeah, ask them tomorrow.” Hamish replied.
“Will do.”
The rest of the night was spent shooting around the mountain passes as either Lizzy or Hamish watched from the ground. They had an inordinate amount of time flying up and down the slopes of Tryfan.
But after a final tenth swoop down the scree, Lizzy glanced at her watch.
“Ah, it’s six already, we ought to head back.”
Fiiiine!” Hamish moaned. “But we were having such a good time.”
“I know, but my parents are gonna have a fit if they don’t see me in the morning.” Lizzy moaned back.
“Alright then, lemme hop back on.”
As Hamish swung his leg over the broom Lizzy clutched his waist. The nimbus rose to a few metres before shooting off back towards Lizzy’s house. As they touched down in her bedroom Lizzy gave Hamish a hug.
“Don’t worry, I’ll ask my parents later.” She whispered in his ear. When the hug ended , Lizzy out her hands on his shoulders and gave him a quick peck on the lips.
Thankfully for Hamish, the darkness hid the blush creeping up his neck. He nodded stiffly and mounted his broom and return to his own house, where, he hoped, pancakes would be for breakfast.

Several fliers swooped low over their heads as Hamish and Lizzy followed Hamish’s parents to the tent.
As they stepped inside Lizzy gasped in wonder, the tent was bigger on the inside.
“Lizzy dear,” Mrs Williams voice interrupted her thoughts. “you’ll be sharing a room with me, the boys will have a room over there.” She pointed with her finger.
“Thank you Mrs Williams.” Lizzy replied.
“Come on children, the why don’t you go around and see if you can meet any friends?” Mr Williams said over his shoulder.
“Righto dad” Hamish replied.
After the unpacking had been done, Hamish and Lizzy set off into the crowds outside.
“Hey look Ham, what’s that?”
“Oh just a sweet vendor.”
“I’ve never heard of Bertie Botts before, any good?”
“Meh, if you don’t mind risking your taste buds.”
Lizzy’s questions were rapid-fire, Hamish was having trouble keeping up. The one about Bertie Botts had caused his stomach to lurch at the prospect of throwing her into the deep end of wizard sweets.
His train of thought was interrupted by a yell from a group coming towards him.
“Hamish!” Hermione Granger shouted.
“Oh hey Hermione, how are you?” Hamish replied with somewhat less gusto.
“Fine thanks, Ron, Holly, come over here, it’s Hamish.” Hermione turned back to look at them. “Who’s this, I haven’t seen you at Hogwarts before, are you joining this year?”
“Calm down Hermione, this is my Muggle friend Lizzy, she lives near me.”
“Oh lovely, my parents are Muggles too, I’m Muggle-born you see.”
Thankfully Lizzy were left unspoken by the arrival of Ronald Weasley and Holly Potter. Ron smiled in recognition while Holly, looked down at her feet, mumbling something that sounded like hello.
Introductions were quickly made.
“Lizzy, this is Holly Potter, the Girl-Who-Lived quite probably the most famous person in the wizarding world, she’s the Seeker on my house’s Quidditch team. Holly this is Lizzy my friend.”
Holly greeted her warmly.
“Just call me Holly if that’s alright, too many people call that title, its embarrassing”
The newly enlarged group carried on their way, goggling at anything and everything, Ron, Hamish and Holly practically drooled at the Quidditch vendor’s tent. Hermione acquainted herself properly with Lizzy, telling her almost everything about the wizarding world Lizzy cared to ask.
At six ‘o’clock Hamish glanced at his watch.
“I think the game’s gonna start in a bit, we should make a move towards the pitch or my dad’s gonna get mad we missed it.” He stated worriedly.
“Yeah, where are you guys sitting by the way?” Ron asked.
“I think at the top of the stands.” Hamish replied.
“Same, we should definitely sit by each other.”
“Right, we’ll see you guys there, later” Hamish bid goodbye, and he and Lizzy went to find his parents.
